Recently, we’ve seen several Standard 1 students coming to our clinic with redness and swelling on their arms after receiving the DT vaccine (Diphtheria and Tetanus).
Common Vaccine Side Effects
Vaccines can sometimes cause minor side effects, which are usually temporary. These side effects include:

- Redness or swelling at the injection site
- Low-grade fever
These side effects typically resolve on their own within a few days and are considered normal.
What to Do If Your Child Has Soreness or Swelling at the Injection Site?
If your child experiences soreness or swelling at the injection site, here’s how you can help:
- Apply a cold compress: Place a cold or wet cloth over the tender area to reduce swelling and ease discomfort.
- Pain relief medication: You can give ibuprofen or paracetamol for pain relief. However, please consult your doctor for the proper dosage based on your child’s age and weight.
How Long Will the Symptoms Last?
Most of the time, these symptoms will begin within 24 hours of the shot and will last for about 3 to 5 days. In most cases, no medical intervention is needed, and the child will feel better soon.

While mild side effects are common, there are certain signs to watch for that require medical attention.

- The redness around the injection site becomes larger and more painful after 3 days.
- Fever persists for more than 3 days.
