A brave little boy came to Dr Low Child Specialist Clinic Batu Pahat with an allergic skin reaction – urticaria (风膜). Learn what urticaria is, its causes, and how it is treated in children.

At Dr Low Child Specialist Clinic Batu Pahat, we recently cared for a young child who came in with an allergic skin reaction, commonly known as 风膜 in Chinese or urticaria in medical terms. His parents noticed sudden red patches appearing on his chest, arms, legs, and even his face. The rash was itchy and appeared to spread quickly, causing much concern.

When the little boy arrived, he was understandably uncomfortable, but he remained brave throughout the check-up. On examination, we confirmed that this was acute urticaria, an allergic skin condition where the immune system reacts to triggers such as certain foods, insect bites, viral infections, or environmental factors.

What is Urticaria (风膜)?

Urticaria, or hives, presents as raised, reddish patches on the skin that can appear anywhere on the body. They may fade within hours but new ones can appear. In children, common triggers include:

  • Certain foods (milk, eggs, nuts, seafood)
  • Viral infections
  • Medications
  • Weather changes, heat, or pressure on the skin

The term 风膜 is often used by parents to describe these transient skin rashes, which may seem to “move around” the body, just like wind.

Treatment & Care

Most cases of urticaria in children are temporary and can be managed with:

  • Antihistamines to reduce itch and rash
  • Avoiding known allergens or triggers
  • Keeping the skin cool and comfortable

In this little patient’s case, medication was given, and the rash gradually improved. The family was reassured that urticaria is usually not dangerous, though in rare cases it can be associated with severe allergic reactions such as swelling of the lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing — requiring urgent medical attention.

Parental Guidance

Parents are encouraged to observe and record possible triggers when a child develops allergic skin reactions. If the rashes are persistent, recurrent, or associated with breathing problems, they should bring the child for a thorough pediatric evaluation.

At Dr Low Child Specialist Clinic Batu Pahat, we emphasize not only treatment but also educating families about managing allergies. With timely care and parental awareness, most children recover well and can continue their daily activities comfortably.
