🍼 Can Milk Really Cause Sinus and Mucus in Children?
In a recent Facebook Live session organized by Pantai Hospital Batu Pahat and Klinik Ezna, Dr Low Han Nee, Consultant Paediatrician at Dr Low Child Specialist Clinic Batu Pahat, addressed one of the most common concerns among parents:
“Is it true that milk causes mucus and sinus in children?”
❓ Medical Facts or Common Misconception?
Dr Low explained that although many parents believe milk—especially formula milk—can cause children to develop more mucus or sinus issues, this is not supported by medical evidence.
📌 The only exception is children with cow’s milk protein allergy, which affects less than 5% of children. These children may show symptoms such as rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, or breathing issues and require special medical care.
✅ Choosing the Right Milk Formula
According to Dr Low:
- Parents should choose a milk brand registered with the Malaysian health authority
- For Muslim families, it should have Halal certification
💬 “Most formula brands are more or less the same in terms of nutritional content. Don’t get too influenced by marketing claims,” said Dr Low.
🆚 Breast Milk vs Formula Milk
Dr Low also highlighted the differences between breast milk and formula milk:
| Breast Milk | Formula Milk |
|---|---|
| Boosts baby’s immunity | Alternative when breast milk isn’t sufficient |
| Reduces infection risk | Safe when used appropriately |
| Recommended for all infants | Choose based on child’s needs and health |
🔖 Breastfeeding is still the best choice whenever possible.

🧪 Do Children Need Allergy Tests?
Parents often rush to get allergy tests done when their child shows signs of sensitivity. However, Dr Low clarified:
“About 90% of allergy cases can be diagnosed based on detailed medical history without needing blood tests.”
🔍 A proper medical history review by a qualified doctor is often sufficient. Allergy testing should only be done when truly necessary, as it can be stressful for children.
🩺 Don’t Self-Diagnose – Seek Professional Advice
If you suspect your child has an allergy or is reacting to milk, don’t assume on your own. Always consult a qualified child specialist to get a proper diagnosis and care plan.
