Runny Nose, Cough & Snoring in Children – Normal or Dangerous?
In a recent Facebook Live session hosted by Pantai Hospital Batu Pahat and Klinik Ezna, Dr Low Han Nee — Pediatrician at Dr Low Child Specialist Clinic Batu Pahat — addressed a concern shared by many parents:
“My child keeps having a runny nose and cough. Should I be worried?”

Dr Low explained that respiratory tract infections are some of the most common illnesses seen in children. Especially during flu seasons or viral outbreaks such as influenza, many kids fall sick repeatedly – and this is often completely normal.

Dr Low categorized respiratory infections into two types:
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI): including pharyngitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, and otitis media (ear infections)
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (LRTI): including pneumonia, which affects the lungs more seriously
He explained that it’s normal for school-going or daycare children to fall sick up to 12 times a year, almost once a month. This happens because young immune systems are still learning to fight off the hundreds of viruses they’re exposed to for the first time.
The good news?
Most of these infections resolve on their own within 7–10 days without needing antibiotics.
⚠️ However, Dr Low Warns:
While many symptoms are mild, parents should not underestimate them — especially when:
- The child is unusually tired or feverish for days
- Snoring is loud or disturbs their sleep
- The cough sounds deep, persistent, or causes difficulty breathing
Self-medicating children is not advisable.
Even though over-the-counter medicines are easy to access, the risk of side effects and incorrect dosages is high, especially for children.
Dr Low’s recommendation:
“Always consult a certified medical practitioner if your child is unwell. Don’t rely solely on pharmacy medications. Safety and proper diagnosis are essential.”
